Cinematography by Santhosh Sivan is really superb, as Mani Ratnam shed off his old partnership with PC Sreeram and began this new one resulting in several movies being applauded for cinematography. Technical Aspects of this movie should be applauded. Janagaraj has a very small screen presence, but owns the scenes every time.
Nasser was at his usual best as a supporting actor, as a Colonel who recognizes his Country more than any mortal life. Roja, played by the niece of Hema Malini, Madhubala was superb in a character, lost in an alien land, adamant to have her husband back from his abductors.
His slight Baritone adds the flavor to his character. Arvind Swamy, who debuted in Ratnam’s Thalapathi, was signed for the lead in this movie. The movie which brought Love in the backdrop of terrorism in its raw and subtle form, Roja was a much anticipated movie, which got extreme acclaim and was a Blockbuster hit. Roja and Rishi unite in a superbly shot scene, in Mani Ratnam style. In a moving conversation, Rishi transforms Liaqat by making him understand that his war is futile and he should give up all this. Liaqat soon catches up with him and holds him at gunpoint. Rishi, in his escapade, kills two terrorists and comes close to the exchange point. Roja, with Rayappa and his troops, and Wasim Khan reach the exchange point, but when they see that Liaqat has not come till now, they give up and Wasim Khan is locked in the prison. He escapes from the clutches of the terrorists, with help from the little girl. Rishi, when hears of this news, is shocked, as he realizes that giving over a dangerous terrorist for a mere cryptographer may prove dangerous for the country. Much to Col.Rayappa’s disgust, the government agrees to hand over Wasim Khan in exchange of Rishi. Roja successfully persuades a Minister to release Wasim Khan. It is then shown, that Liaqat’s brother who was sent across the border to Pakistan was shot down by the Pakistani Army, which almost has Liaqat in shambles, but he still believes that everything is for the good. The terrorist beat him, but Rishi proves his love and patriotism for his country, on which even Liaqat is surprised. They burn an Indian Flag in disgust, on which Rishi lies on his stomach, to muzzle the fire. The Indian government denies to negotiate with the terrorists, surprising the terrorists and Roja alike. Rishi tries to reason with them diplomatically, off which Liaqat escapes with much subtlety. Liaqat Khan (Kapoor), the leader of the terrorists is sterile towards him, sometimes arguing with him the system of Indian Rule. The terrorists torture him, and a kind girl offers him food and other amenities, on which Rishi and the terrorists scoff at. Rishi is bonded in a wooden house somewhere in Kashmir. The cinematography in that scene was superb and ensures us of the seriousness of the scene. He contradicts Roja’s every point, being unsuccessful in making Roja understand the demerits of releasing Wasim Khan. The authorities call Col.Rayappa, whose cold attitude and patriotism is evident in his voice. Being in an alien land and not knowing the language, Roja pleads to the local authorities in Tamil to search her husband. Rishi gets kidnapped by the terrorists, who keep him in ransom for exchange with the previously caught mastermind Wasim Khan. Rishi is assigned to an outpost in Kashmir to decrypt enemy messages. Roja is sorry for being too harsh with Rishi and love blossoms between the two. Roja is flabbergasted and still not believes Rishi, until she phones her sister and gets to know the truth. They both get into a word fight, until Rishi blurts out that her sister was in love with her cousin and she advised him to marry Roja. Roja one evening asks Rishi why did he decline her sister’s marriage proposal and married her instead. For example – putting a lighted cigarette in her mouth to make her smoke, kissing her in the kitchen, etc. Roja is shocked when she sees Rishi’s outwardly nuances towards her. But when her sister’s marriage is agreed with her cousin, Roja agrees to the marriage, only to pacify her family and the villagers. Roja, unaware of the situation, still believes that Rishi is the perfect match for her sister.
Rishi reluctantly agrees, but shocks everyone by asking Roja’s hand in marriage. Everything goes smoothly, until Rishi is being told by Roja’s sister to decline the proposal, as she is in love with her cousin. Rishi Kumar (Arvind Swamy) who works as a cryptographer to the Army, comes to the village with a marriage proposal to Roja’s sister. Roja (Madhoo) is a plain bumble village girl, who wishes her sister’s marriage above than her own’s. Then the movie switches to the south, in the village of Sundarapandianpuram in Tirunelveli District. A terrorist mastermind is caught by the team of Col. Synopsis:- The movie opens with a cold chase across the forests of Kashmir, involving terrorists and the Army.
